Moonlighting: The Most Natural Outdoor Lighting Effect

Downlighting — sometimes called moonlighting when done from tree canopies — is the most naturalistic outdoor lighting technique available. Rather than uplighting that creates dramatic but artificial-looking effects, downlighting places fixtures high above the landscape and casts soft, diffused pools of light downward, exactly as the moon does. The result is outdoor areas that feel naturally illuminated rather than artificially lit.

Bernardy Lighting mounts downlighting fixtures in mature tree canopies, on soffit eaves at roofline height, on pergola and pavilion tops, and on custom mounting poles — anywhere that height can be gained to create the top-down lighting effect. When filtered through tree branches and leaves, downlighting creates the moving, dappled shadow patterns that define moonlight — one of the most sought-after effects in high-end residential outdoor lighting design.

Beyond aesthetics, downlighting is functionally superior to path lights and low-level fixtures for illuminating outdoor zones. A single fixture mounted 20 feet up in a tree can illuminate a 15-foot diameter area naturally — with no fixtures on the ground to trip over, mow around, or damage with outdoor furniture.

Downlighting Techniques We Use

Tree Moonlighting

Fixtures mounted 15–25 feet up in mature trees cast diffused light through the canopy onto the landscape below — creating the dappled, natural moonlight effect that’s impossible to fake from ground level.

Soffit Downlighting

Recessed fixtures in roof soffits and eaves at 8–12 foot heights cast focused downward pools across driveways, entries, and patios — clean architectural illumination with no glare.

Pergola Top Downlights

Fixtures mounted on top of pergola beams or rafters cast downward through the structure — illuminating the surface below while the fixtures themselves stay hidden above the pergola plane.

Overhead Zone Lighting

Custom-mounted fixtures on tall poles or building peaks illuminate defined outdoor zones — seating areas, fire pit circles, and outdoor kitchens — from directly above with minimal shadow casting.

Canopy & Shade Structure Downlights

Fixtures mounted on the structural frame of shade sails, tensioned canopies, and market umbrellas cast down onto the space below — illuminating outdoor living areas without any ground-level hardware.

Driveway & Path Moonlighting

For driveways lined with mature trees, mounting fixtures high in the canopy illuminates the entire drive naturally — no path lights to mow around or get hit by cars, just clean overhead illumination.

Benefits of Downlighting

  • The most natural-looking outdoor lighting effect — mimics moonlight in a way no ground-level fixture can replicate
  • No ground-level hardware — nothing to trip over, mow around, break with equipment, or displace with furniture
  • Wide-area coverage from a single fixture — one well-positioned downlight covers more area than 4–6 path lights
  • Reduces glare — overhead light sources don’t shine directly into eyes the way low-level path lights and uplights do
  • Creates dappled shadow play — tree-mounted downlights produce the moving leaf-shadow patterns that define high-end moonlighting
  • Functionally safe — properly illuminated outdoor zones from overhead prevent falls and allow clear visibility of the entire area

Our Installation Process

1

Free On-Site Consultation

We assess your tree canopy, roofline heights, and outdoor zones to identify the best mounting positions for downlighting fixtures that will create your desired effect.

2

Custom Design & Proposal

You receive a detailed proposal with fixture mounting locations, aiming diagrams, coverage zones, and wiring routes — along with examples of the finished moonlighting effect.

3

Professional Installation

Our crew safely mounts fixtures at height in trees or on structures, runs low-voltage wiring down through tree trunks or along structures, and connects to your transformer system.

4

Final Walkthrough & Warranty

We demo the complete moonlighting effect at dusk, fine-tune fixture positions, set timers, and provide a 3-, 5-, or 7-year Bernardy Lighting system warranty covering qualifying materials and our labor/workmanship, depending on the selected package and subject to the written warranty terms.

Serving All of DFW

We install downlighting throughout Dallas-Fort Worth including Lewisville, Flower Mound, Southlake, Westlake, Frisco, Plano, Colleyville, Grapevine, Highland Village, Trophy Club, Highland Park, University Park, and all surrounding communities.

DFW’s mature neighborhoods — particularly Highland Park, University Park, and established areas of Southlake — feature the large, established trees that make moonlighting most dramatic. If you have mature live oaks, cedar elms, or pecans on your property, you have the raw material for one of the most spectacular outdoor lighting effects available.

Downlighting FAQ

Does mounting fixtures in trees harm the trees?

When done correctly, tree-mounted lighting does not harm trees. We use non-penetrating mounting systems or minimal, properly sized lag bolts at locations that don’t affect tree structure. Fixture placement and mounting choices consider tree health; consult an arborist for tree-specific concerns.

How do you run wiring up to fixtures in trees?

Low-voltage wire is run up the back side of the trunk and secured with arborist-approved clips that don’t penetrate the bark. Wire routes are planned to be minimally visible and allow for tree growth without restricting the wire over time.

How high do downlighting fixtures need to be mounted?

For the best moonlighting effect, 15–25 feet is ideal in tree canopies. Soffit-mounted downlights at 8–12 feet are effective for architectural applications. The height determines the spread of the light cone — higher fixtures cover a larger area with more diffuse, natural-looking light.

Can downlighting replace path lights along a walkway?

In most cases yes — if there’s a tree or overhang adjacent to the walkway, a single downlight can illuminate the entire path more naturally and effectively than multiple path lights. This is a popular upgrade on properties with mature tree coverage along entry walks.

Do downlights need to be repositioned as trees grow?

Not typically — as trees grow, the canopy often improves the diffusion effect. We do recommend an annual inspection to check mounting security, wire slack, and fixture positioning as the tree matures over years.
