Your Garden’s Best Hours Are After Sunset
Most homeowners invest thousands in landscaping — premium plants, stone edging, raised beds, ornamental trees — and then watch it all disappear at sundown. Garden lighting is what gives your landscape its second life: the hours between dusk and midnight when DFW evenings are warm, the air is still, and your outdoor spaces are most enjoyable.
Bernardy Lighting designs garden lighting systems that accent without overwhelming. We use low-angle uplights to graze stone walls and reveal texture, narrow-beam spotlights to single out specimen plants, and diffuse path lights to guide movement through planted areas without destroying night vision or creating glare.
The key to great garden lighting is restraint and precision. A single well-aimed fixture on the right plant creates more impact than a dozen randomly placed stake lights. Our designers understand horticulture, growth habits, and how different plant types respond to various lighting angles — so your system looks as good in five years as it does on install day.
Garden Lighting Techniques
Ornamental Tree Uplighting
Fixtures placed at the base of crape myrtles, Japanese maples, and ornamental pears illuminate canopy structure from below — transforming garden trees into dramatic nighttime sculptures.
Flower Bed Accent Lighting
Low-profile bollard or stake lights placed within flower beds cast warm light across seasonal color — azaleas, roses, lavender, and ornamental grasses glow with living warmth after dark.
Stone Wall Grazing
Fixtures placed close and parallel to stone retaining walls, garden borders, and raised beds graze light across the surface — revealing texture and depth invisible in daytime flat light.
Shrub Uplighting
Low-profile ground fixtures placed behind or beside large shrubs — boxwood hedges, hollies, Indian hawthorn — create silhouette and volume effects that define garden structure.
Garden Path Lighting
Low mushroom-cap or directional path lights guide movement through garden areas while casting soft downward light onto planted borders — functional and beautiful simultaneously.
Water Feature Garden Lighting
Above-ground surrounding fixtures for garden ponds, fountains, and pondless waterfalls integrate the water element into your garden’s nighttime composition.
Benefits of Garden Lighting
- Doubles your garden’s effective hours — the investment you made in landscaping pays dividends after dark, not just during daylight
- Reveals texture and depth — low-angle and grazing light shows plant structure and stone texture that flat daylight obscures
- Creates visual layers — foreground beds, mid-ground shrubs, and background trees lit independently create depth and dimensionality
- Safe navigation — illuminated paths and garden edges prevent trips and falls during evening outdoor use
- Year-round interest — even dormant winter gardens look intentional and designed with proper accent lighting
- Photography-worthy outdoor spaces — garden lighting creates the atmospheric shots that make your home unmistakable on listing photos and social media

Garden Lighting FAQ
Will garden lighting harm my plants?
Low-voltage LED fixtures produce minimal heat and don’t affect plant health or growth cycles when properly aimed. We avoid placing intense fixtures directly at plant crowns and use appropriate beam angles to illuminate without stressing plants.
What happens to my lighting as plants grow?
All our fixtures are adjustable — we design systems with plant growth in mind, using adjustable stake mounts and directional heads that can be re-aimed as your garden matures. Annual tune-ups (available as a service) keep your system optimized.
Can I add garden lighting to my existing landscape lighting system?
In most cases yes — we assess your existing transformer capacity and add garden zone fixtures as an expansion. If your transformer is at capacity, we add a second unit to handle the additional load.
How do you handle irrigation systems when burying wires?
Before trenching, we review visible site conditions and ask the property owner to identify known private irrigation and other buried lines. Any additional locating requirements are confirmed in the project scope. The planned wire route is documented around known site conditions.
What’s the best lighting for seasonal color beds?
For rotating seasonal color — pansies in winter, begonias and impatiens in summer — we recommend adjustable mini-spotlights that can be repositioned as bed plantings change, combined with warm 2700K color temperature that flatters virtually any flower color.
