Your Patio After Dark Is Where Life Happens
In DFW, outdoor living season runs from March through November — and with proper patio lighting, it runs from sunup to midnight. Your patio, deck, or covered outdoor area is an extension of your home’s living space, and it deserves the same thoughtful lighting design as any interior room.
Bernardy Lighting designs layered patio lighting systems that combine overhead illumination, task lighting for cooking and dining areas, ambient accent lights, and perimeter features. The goal is a space that’s bright enough to function but warm and inviting enough that guests never want to go inside.
Whether your patio is a simple covered concrete slab or a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with fireplace, pergola, and pool view, we design a lighting system that fits your space and usage patterns. Our patio designs are always multi-zone — so you can have bright functional light when you’re cooking and dim, atmospheric light when you’re entertaining.
Patio Lighting Options We Install
Recessed Ceiling Downlights
For covered patios and pergolas with solid ceilings, recessed LED downlights provide clean overhead illumination — dimmable, weatherproof, and invisible when not in use.
String & Bistro Lights
Professionally installed Edison-style string lights on custom mounting posts create the warm, festive overhead canopy that’s perfect for outdoor dining and entertaining — without the DIY look.
Wall Sconces
Exterior-rated wall sconces on patio walls, outdoor kitchen structures, and fence posts add ambient side lighting and define the edges of your outdoor living space.
Step & Riser Lighting
Recessed or surface-mounted lights in patio steps, deck risers, and retaining wall faces illuminate grade changes — preventing trips and adding a sophisticated architectural detail.
Outdoor Kitchen Lighting
Under-cabinet LEDs on outdoor kitchens, task lights over grills, and accent lights on bar areas — all weather-rated and properly positioned for cooking safety and ambiance.
Perimeter & Planter Accents
Uplights within planters, along patio edges, and in surrounding garden borders extend the visual boundary of your patio and create depth beyond the hardscape.

Patio Lighting FAQ
Can you add lighting to a covered patio that already has a ceiling fan?
Yes — we work around existing fans and fixtures, adding supplemental recessed lighting and perimeter accents that work with your fan rather than replacing it. The result is a layered system with more control and better light distribution.
Are string lights a permanent installation or temporary?
Our string light installations are permanent — we install weatherproof mounting hardware, proper strain relief, and a dedicated outdoor outlet or hardwired connection. No seasonal hanging and re-hanging; your lights are up year-round and handle DFW’s weather.
Can I control patio lights separately from my landscape lighting?
Absolutely. Patio lighting is typically on its own zone or circuit — giving you independent control over timing and dimming. You might want landscape lights on until midnight but patio lights off at 10 PM; our systems handle that easily.
What weatherproofing rating do you use for patio fixtures?
All fixtures we install in exposed or semi-exposed patio locations are rated UL Wet Location or UL Damp Location as appropriate — designed to handle DFW’s rain, humidity, and occasional hail without failure.
How do you run wiring to an open deck without a ceiling?
For open decks and pergolas, we run conduit along structural members, use surface-mount or post-mounted fixtures, and route wiring in ways that stay protected and visually clean. We’ve developed effective approaches for every patio and deck configuration common in DFW.
